From Containment to Connection: Gentleness in the MSE

This Week in Auburn, California

I’m honored to be on site this week at the Placer County Juvenile Correctional Facility, partnering with their dedicated team as they continue building a Culture of Gentleness within their Multi-Sensory Environment (MSE).

This work goes far beyond equipment or room design.
It is about invitation, creating spaces where young people feel safe, valued, and emotionally held. When gentleness becomes the foundation, the MSE transforms into a place where regulation, trust, and connection can begin to grow.

The excitement in this journey is palpable.
It reflects a shared commitment to improving quality of life, supporting emotional regulation, and offering meaningful moments of calm, presence, and possibility within a juvenile justice setting.

Grateful to walk alongside a team willing to lean into compassion, intentionality, and relationship as the true therapeutic tools of the MSE.

Gentleness is not passive. It is purposeful.
And when practiced well, it changes lives.
